Don's DNA Report

NOTE: “Almost certainly” is not the same as undeniable proof. There is still a slight chance that I might be descended from some other person of that time period who was a brother or cousin of Roger Eastman, perhaps even a rather distant cousin. However, I am obviously related.”

“Luckily for me, I met Katherine Hope Borges, a DNA expert and Director of the International Society of Genetic Genealogy (ISOGG). In the course of conversation, She mentioned that I should start a DNA project to prove or disprove my relationship to others with the EASTMAN name. Katherine then volunteered to do all the hard work. If you have ever met Katherine, you already know that she is quick to do things like that!

Today, thanks to Katherine and also thanks to the folks at Family Tree DNA, I now have proof that I am related to the others who are known descendants of Roger Eastman, the 1638 immigrant. I am “in the family.”

Katherine Hope Borges has since written a description of the process she went through to establish my family identity. The article was published in the Southern California Genealogical Society’s newsletter and is now available online. If you would like to read a typical example of how any male can prove or disprove his connection to another family, please read Katherine Hope Borges’ (non-technical) article at http://www.scgsgenealogy.com/EastmanDNA.htm.”

Dick Eastman was fortunate to have Ms. Borges and FTDNA to assist him in proving his connection to earlier ancestors. However each of you have a lot of assistance along the way in doing your DNA test. FTDNA has made several changes to their information and it is much easier to understand and see results. Please remember that the more Peacocks we have tested the closer we will get to our goal of placing all of our Peacocks in the right branch of the family.

Right now I am enjoying assistance by 4 from the Tucker family who have matched my DNA up to 67/67. They are sharing a lot of records and data they have collected, and are still finding on their family. We have a similar thing happening with descendants of Bryant and Cullen Peacock who have not matched Peacock DNA yet, but do match several from the Ro(d)gers family line. Larry Rodgers, the head of the Ro(d)gers Project has shown 19 members who match the Bryant/Cullen testers closely. An interesting item is some of them came from Surry County, VA, the same area that Samuel Peacock I came from. The Ro(d)gers kin also came to NC and several in the Wayne County, NC area. We have another Cullen descendant taking the test at this time, so the more testers from that family line, the better information we will have to research.

One major line I hope to see get more DNA tested is the Levi Peacock line, as the two testers are off from the Samuel Peacock line by one marker. That does not mean they are not kin, it just shows there has been a mutation to occur in that line and more testing may help to show where it originated. If you are a Levi descendant, please consider testing. Anyone interested in knowing more about the DNA test or want to test, or may be willing to test and save a few dollars if FTDNA gives another special price, let me know by email and I will contact you if a special comes up.

To all persons who have been tested please go to the FTDNA site and upload your results to y Search so you and others can search for matches to your DNA, but not always by your name. y Search is a great resource for finding matches to your DNA, anyplace in the world.
